Alfve and his family were Sunni Muslims in Iraq. Because of their religion, Alfve was denied the possibility of getting an education or participating meaningfully in Iraqi society and as a teenager Alfve was subject to beatings and abitary incarceration. Eventually he was forced to flee, leaving behind his home and family.

But when Alfve fled in search of freedom and safety he found himself back in prison unlawfully detained on Manus Island by the Australian government. Despite qualifying as a genuine refugee, Alfve was imprisoned for six and half years.

Finally, in July 2019, Alfve was approved for resettlement in the United States. Initially Alfve found work at a Home Depot warehouse but he struggled with the phsyical demands of the job due to ongoing ill heath as a result of the poor medical treatment he received while in detention on Manus. Alfve now has casual work in another warehouse where he is at constant risk of exposure to COVID-19. When an outbreak occurs in the workplace Alfve’s shifts are cancelled and he is sent home without pay.

Alfve feels very alone and he struggles to make enough money to survive. Alfve needs work that will give him more security and allow him to build a stable life.

Commercial truck driving licences have been a ticket to self-sufficiency and independence for dozens of Manus and Nauru refugees, but training and licence costs are a stumbling block.

The Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this fundraiser to help Alfve fund the training costs for a commercial truck-driving licence. He tells us he dreams of having the opportunity to become independent and build a stable life.

Funds donated will be held in Ads-Up’s Charity Account and used to directly pay for training costs. If this page raises more than is required to fund Alfve’s training, excess funds will be reallocated to help another refugee cover training costs.
